The Ahwahnee Hotel, named for the Ahwahneechi band of Southern Miwok Indians who inhabited the valley originally, opened July 16, 1927 and was designed to blend with the natural surroundings and to be impervious to fire, which had destroyed many of the buildings that had come before. The Ahwahnee blends elements of Native American, Arts & Crafts movement, Persian, and Art Deco design throughout the hotel. It is registered as a National Historic Landmark and with the Historic Hotels of America.
